harmony: Diminished

do not use the Octatonic – dominant mode  scale over diminished chords for improvisation. This makes this a rather ambiguous scale not characteristic of a diminished sound.

Any scale that contains all the chord tones of a chord can be used for improvisation over that chord.
The following scales contain all the Diminished chord tones (1,3b,5b,6)
  • Locrian #6 scale - Intervals: 1,2b,3b,4,5b,6,7b
  • Octatonic scale - Intervals: 1,2,3b,4,5b,6b,6,7
  • Octatonic - dominant mode scale - Intervals: 1,2b,3b,3,5b,5,6,7b
